Fashion has two ways of dress making: Patterns and Draping
Draping is the starting point of fashion. Draping means to wrap fabric around yourself to create a garment, no patterns or stitching needed. It has been used for thousands of years.
Even if we evolved into intricate patterns and machine stitching, draping is coming back.
A draped garment is made from a single piece of fabric that is draped over the body. It cuts down in tailoring, which means less labour, less cut-off fabric waste, and less energy used.
It’s coming back because it’s DIY, it’s sustainable, and that makes it fashionable once again. Draping your clothing presents opportunities for variation with the same garment. This means multiple outfits with only one garment. No more throwing clothes out when they don’t fit anymore, draping will always fit you.
We have gotten used to patterned clothing, but a shift towards draping means fashion will change significantly. The first signals of this change is happening right now, as patterned dresses incorporate draping methods and visuals.
